Be a Winner!

My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. (Prov. 3:1-4)

Everyone makes mistakes, including churches. Here are some bloopers taken from church newsletters and bulletins: * The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet on Friday at 7 p.m. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy. * Weight Watchers will meet at 7 p.m. Please use large double door at the side entrance. * The Low Self-Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 to 8:30 p.m. Please use the back door. * The Pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday morning. * Ushers will be glad to eat latecomers to the service. * Please remember in prayer the many who are sick of our church and community. * A new loudspeaker system has been installed in the church. It was given by one of our members in honor of his wife. * A cookbook is being compiled by the ladies of the church. Please submit your favorite recipe, also a short antidote for it. * The Ladies Society will be selling their new cookbook at the church supper this Wednesday night. The proceeds will help purchase a stomach pump for our community hospital. * Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say “hell “ to someone who doesn't care much about you. * Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. * The outreach committee has enlisted 25 visitors to make calls on people who are not afflicted with any church. * Tuesday evening there will be a meeting of the Boars of Deacons. * Men’s Luncheon: You will hear an excellent speaker and heave a healthy lunch. * Hot Dog Supper tonight after church–please bring your own hot dogs and guns. * Next Sunday evening there will be a Super Bowel Party. * Miss Bertha Belch, Missionary from Africa will be speaking at Calvary Memorial Church in Racine. “Come tonight and hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa.”

Everyone makes mistakes, but did you know that no matter what mistakes you have made, you can still be a winner with the Lord? The book of Proverbs is a book of wisdom that shows us how to live godly and avoid the pitfalls of unwise, ungodly conduct. The verses above come from the third chapter of the book and teach us all how to win in life.

* Don’t Forget My Teachings. The first step to the winner’s circle is recognizing that we all need a map we can trust. Have you ever had a situation when you needed directions to a destination? It’s happened to me more than once: I’ll be somewhat unsure which road to take so I’ll pull over and ask someone for directions. They’ll start telling me about stop signs, and “rights” and “lefts” and as I’m listening, it dawns on me they really don’t have a clue how to get there. But they’ll go on and on telling me the direction they think I should go. I thank them politely and drive away – often more confused than before I stopped. We all need a map we can trust. We all need a guide that’s reliable. And we have it in the Bible. But we have to remember to consult it regularly. The Lord told Joshua, “Study this Book continually. Meditate on it day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it. Only then will you succeed.” Every time you remember His teachings you take a step towards becoming a winner.

* Keep My Commandments In Your Heart. The first step to winning is a negative (don’t forget). The second step is a positive (keep my commandments). Every commandment God has given in His Word is for our own good. Every time we choose to ignore his commandments we loose. Notice it says “Keep my commandments in your heart.” What does that mean? When the bible speaks of the heart it is referring to the inner person – the thoughts and emotions we carry around inside of us. Now catch this: It’s the unseen inner person that really makes the difference between winning and loosing. It’s often very easy to give the appearance that we are walking in obedience to the Lord. But have you made the discovery that you can be obeying on the outside but disobeying on the inside? If you want to win – make a habit of bringing your thoughts and emotions into obedience to the commandments of God.

* Let Love And Faithfulness Never Leave You. When it comes to love and faithfulness, verse three says you should, “bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” The Orthodox Jews loved the Word of God so dearly they literally bound it around their heads and arms with leather straps called phylacteries. When they were wearing the phylacteries it was impossible for them to forget God’s Word. For instance, if you wrote a verse on a brick, put the brick on a rope and then wore it around your neck all day, you would constantly be reminded of God and His Word. But how burdensome that would be! The external pressure of that brick bearing down on your neck would be more than anyone would want to bear. Good news: You don’t have to wear a brick around your neck. God says you can write His Word on the tablet of your heart. With His Spirit inside of you, there is an internal pressure that injects love and faithfulness into every circumstance. When you choose to respond with love and faithfulness – you win!

What happens when you take these simple steps? You win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. In other words, your whole life is made better. Not only will you enjoy favor with other people, but you will enjoy God’s blessing upon your life. And that’s the greatest win of all!

Everyone makes mistakes now and then. How many mistakes might you avoid today if you remember these three steps? Don’t choose to loose. Don’t forget God’s teachings, remember His commandments, and let love and faithfulness be characterize your life.

Live the Victorious Life,
PT
